The School District's video recording of the public testimony and voting at the three-hour School Reform Commission meeting on school closings March 7 is now online. And in case you missed the protests, the American Federation of Teachers has produced a five-minute video showing the opposition to closings on the day of the vote.
The District has also posted the press release detailing Thursday's final closing decisions on its Facilities Master Plan web page. District officials say that the transition process for affected schools will be launched with a citywide principals' meeting on Wednesday, March 13, followed by meetings at individual schools.

Pamela Williams' comments in the video showing University City High School students' reactions are so poignant -- "you denied us education for 400 years, now we get in and you're pulling it out from under us." So many fought and endured hardship for a right to equal public education -- and it was possible to make that demand and fight that fight under the laws of the land (14th amendment to the Constitution) even though it took almost a century. Now that public education is being dismantled in cities, where schools are predominantly poor and minority (yes, you don't see it happening in the burbs yet), are we forfeiting that right? Is it like what happened to welfare, what is happening to social security, to voting rights? What kind of city, state, country are we becoming?

Vet--WPHS-------------Your post is also very poignant. What is happening is little by little the common man's rights are being taken from us and it's all by design. Corporations have always tried to control the lives of all workers but unions have been a problem. Now, the 1% sees an opportunity to turn the clocks back and they're all in. Don't even remotely look for help from pols like Nutter. He is selling out the very people who elected him. Obama is more charming but he's done nothing to help either. The answer to all your questions is YES, we are losing our human, civil and worker rights and if unions are dissolved, all hope is lost. The privateers mean our kids no good, whatsoever and it's not even close. Ask yourself where they were before money could be made off our kids. They don't even dare take their snake oil drivel to the more affluent suburbs where they'd be shown the door immediately. The inner cities where hopelessness and poverty go hand in hand, is where they can pick the bones of the poor for a profit.

Someone needs to make a YouTube video of just the SRC's voting on closing the schools. If people saw how ridiculous that part of the process was, with the SRC rushing through it to get the hell out of there, they would be mortified.
