Fifth-grader Nezha Tairi holds the microphone as Palestinian-American poet, novelist, and teacher Naomi Shihab Nye sings a lullaby from her children’s book “Lullaby Raft” to students at John Moffet Elementary School. Local Arab arts and education organization Al-Bustan Seeds of Culture hosted Nye, who held poetry readings and writing workshops at Moffet and Science Leadership Academy, Feb. 13. The events exposed students to Arab culture; Moffet has many students of Arab descent.
A self-described “wandering poet,” Nye has spent more than 30 years leading writing workshops that inspire children and adults. Born in the U.S. to a Palestinian father and American mother, her writings reflect the intricacies of living as a product of two worlds.
