Student Journalism Awards 2012




The Philadelphia Public School Notebook is glad to announce the winners of the 2012 Student Journalism Awards! Every year the Notebook recognizes and honors the best work of Philadelphia's high school newspaper writers and editors.

This year, 12 high schools entered the competition. The winners will be presented their awards at our annual Turning the Page for Change event on June 12.

Each student will receive a cash prize and an e-tablet, courtesy of our student journalism award partners, AL DIA News and IKEA South Philadelphia. Congratulations to all of our honorees!

This year's winners include:

  • Best Commentary: Emmanuelyne Dargbeh from Academy at Palumbo for  “Kony 2012, an African view” in The Griffin Gazette.
  • Best School News Reporting: Victoria Warren from Maritime Academy Charter School for “The New Fitness Trend: Boot Camp” in The Maritime Wave.
  • Best Sports Coverage: Akil Lewis-King from Academy at Palumbo for various sport articles in The Griffin Gazette.
  • Best Multimedia Piece: Trevor Wuest from The Arts Academy at Benjamin Rush High School for “What are the benefits of karate?” in Rush Reporting.
