This week: 5 protests of school-closings plan

The hearings have ended, but the protests are continuing unabated. As the School Reform Commission's March 7 vote on the District's mass closings plan approaches, community groups will be rallying to keep schools open, some supporting a one-year-moratorium on closures. There are five protests planned for Wednesday and Thursday this week. 

Update: The Black Clergy of Philadelphia and Vicinity is holding a forum on school closings tomorrow. See details below.


​Rally for Vare Elementary 
JUNTOS, a community group that supports the city's Latino immigrants, will be rallying to keep Vare Elementary open.

Wednesday, Feb. 27

ACTION United and PCAPS march to protest school closings
Two community groups, ACTION United and the Philadelphia Coalition Advocating for Public Schools (PCAPS), are organizing three marches around the city to raise awareness and protest the proposed school-closings plan. They are advocating for a one-year moratorium on school closings.

Wednesday, Feb. 27
3:30-6 p.m.
South Philadelphia: Smith Elementary, 1900 Wharton St.
North Philadelphia: 24th Street and Ridge Avenue
Germantown: Germantown High, near Germantown Avenue and East Herman Street.


Keep Carroll open
Youth United for Change will join students, parents, and community members to protest the decision to close Carroll High School. Protesters will form a human chain around the school, and students will present a letter addressed to Superintendent William Hite in an effort to persuade the District to remove Carroll from the closings list.

Rally to Save Beeber
Beeber's parents, staff, and students will hold a rally to keep the West Philadelphia neighborhood school open, despite the School District's recommendations that the building be closed at the end of the school year.

Education forum on Philadelphia School Closings
The Black Clergy of Philadelphia & Vicinity will hold a forum, where they will discuss Enon Tabernacle Baptist's report on school closings.
