District to offer free health physicals for high school athletes

Despite questions about whether there will be funding for varsity sports this fall, the District is offering free sports physicals at its 440 N. Broad St. headquarters from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, June 1.

The exams will include assessments by a volunteer team of cardiology, pulmonary, and orthopedic specialists and are more extensive than what a general practitioner typically provides, according to Robert Coleman, executive director of the District athletic department.

“This is a free, but quality service opportunity,” said Coleman in promoting the event on YouTube with David Shipon, a cardiologist at the Heart Center of Philadelphia and executive director of the Athletic Health Organization, cosponsor of the event.

Significant health-related problems, some potentially lethal, have been found in the past, according to Shipon.

The event, being held for an eighth year, is open to high school athletes at all PIAA District XII schools, including parochial and charter school athletes.

For more information, call the Office of Athletics at 215-400-4190.
