In December, the Notebook thanked its members for their financial support with a reception in its Ranstead Street offices. The member-only event featured Elizabeth Green, co-founder, CEO, and editor-in-chief of Chalkbeat – an education news organization with bureaus in four cities.
Green is the author of Building a Better Teacher, a 2014 book that made the New York Times Notable list. It explores teaching as a craft and how complicated the profession can be. She discussed and signed copies of her book.

Mental health series continues
The Notebook recently received a grant from the van Ameringen Foundation to report on behavioral health in schools. This topic was the theme for the Notebook’s last print edition.
An online series launched in the fall. Notebook freelance writer Paul Jablow has been delving into mental health issues, focusing on the impact of childhood trauma. His stories highlight the efforts of schools, mental health agencies, and parents.
The series continues in 2015. Ahead is a multimedia story about a student who has overcome enormous personal obstacles with the help of a mentor, behavioral health specialists, and his mother. If you have story ideas, contact Paul Jablow.
