A student was found to be in possession of a loaded gun during a routine metal detector scan on Monday morning at Samuel S. Fels High School.
The incident happened shortly after 7:30 a.m. The school, in the Lawncrest section of Northeast Philadelphia, was put on lockdown and the police were called. The student was taken into custody. The gun was removed without incident, and the lockdown was lifted.
The School District issued a statement: “The safety of our students and staff is always our top priority, which is why the School District of Philadelphia has strict safety protocols in place. This issue was dealt with swiftly and effectively, thanks to the safety protocols in place and assistance of all involved. The School District is fully cooperating with the Philadelphia Police Department as they investigate this matter.”
