Philadelphia School District officials are celebrating Philadelphia's rate of improvement on the state's standardized test, the Pennsylvania System of School Assessment (PSSA). About 30 percent of the District's fifth, eighth, and eleventh graders scored advanced or proficient in reading and math on this spring's test, with overall scores growing by six points over last year.
With school funding increases that state officials glowingly called "a historic investment in education," Governor Ed Rendell's second budget was signed into law over Fourth of July weekend.
The first-ever systemwide policy detailing the Philadelphia School District's commitment to ensuring English Language Learner (ELL) students fair access to high quality educational opportunities will be up for approval before the School Reform Commission in August.
