Coming next week: The Notebook Fall Guide

by thenotebook on Aug 28 2009

Look for it at your school on the first day! It will also be available in early September at libraries and community sites around Philadelphia.

Watch this space next week for The Notebook's first ever Fall Guide. (Here it is!) This year the spotlight is on high schools and it will tell you what you really need to know to start the school year off right.

The Fall Guide will be available starting late next week. For the first time, you'll be able to pick up a copy of the Notebook on the first day of school. This is part of the Notebook's expansion plan. This spring you'll also find another edition of the Notebook, which will bring us to six editions per year.

Features in the Fall Guide include profiles of all public high schools and articles about what's new in the District, selecting a high school, new charter schools, and "what I wish I knew."

Let's start the conversation now--what do you wish you knew about high school before you started?

I wish I had known better what I could handle. I didn't participate in some activities because I was so psyched out by my middle school teachers saying that high school would be so hard and time consuming that I thought I wouldn't have a spare minute! Turns out that you make it work, and I probably could have fit more activities in.

I was also intimidated by news stories about kids trying to start Gay Straight Alliances and the sort of backlash they got for doing that. Wasn't till a few years later that my sister and some of her friends started one at my high school. That is one of the things that is really inspiring about seeing the activities listed at these schools--there are GSAs and student activist groups at high schools all over Philly. Students have learned they shouldn't be intimidated and can work on the issues that are important to them. Definitely an important lifelong lesson.

Wow, this is very cool. We will be certain to come back here to read the issues. Focusing and highlighting high schools is a great idea whose time has come. casino en ligne

High school is a frightening prospect for new students. Thank goodness there is a comprehensive guide like this that helps parents in selecting the right school for their child. US Iran conflict

I believe that schools with too many extracurricular activities deflects from the proper existence of schools - to educate our children.
Activities such as glee club, cheerleading, band etc serve to form cliques and perpetuate stereotypes. Im not saying thsat there shouldnt be any at all - but the focus HAS to remain on study and education.
I hope this guide reflects this.

Its my childs turn to start junior high next year, and Im not sure i can say who is more terrified- me or him! I can only hope there are other gentle and kind young adults just like him so the experience is not too traumatic.
This guide helped me immensely in giving him suggestions as to how to meet likeminded students and make good friends. I would recommend it to all parents.
