From the archives: classroom observation

Check how the desks are arranged when you observe or visit a classroom.
The Fall 1997 edition of the Notebook had a clip and save article about how to watch your child's class. This topic came up on the new Philly School Choice blog, where Len Lipkin sought advice on questions to ask during an open house or school visit.
Many of the same suggestions about what to look for in your child's class are similar to the criteria of a new evaluation system in the D.C. Public Schools. That system is running into some resistance for being too prescriptive.
What do you look for as a parent when checking out a potential school? Teachers, do you think similar issues should be addressed during evaluations?
