Ackerman removes name from 'manifesto'

by Erika Owens on Oct 15 2010

The Washington Post published an op-ed signed by several education leaders including Joel Klein, Michelle Rhee, and Superintendent Ackerman. But Ackerman has asked for her name to be removed.

According to an email from Chief Academic Officer David Weiner, Ackerman "did not see nor approve the final version submitted to the Post." Weiner said that he gave the go-ahead for Ackerman's name to be put on the final version, and apologized for his error. Weiner said that Ackerman will submit her own response.

Update: Ackerman's response.

Once again Ackerman blames an "underling" rather than taking responsibility. Her arrogance is bigger than her salary...

So...it either took her 5 days to read this widely quoted article, or, let's see, maybe, just maybe, Rhee's precipitous resignation, the fallout from the ham handed handling of WPHS, the push back at the SRC meeting made this kind of "change" not something she wants in the forefront right now. Or, could it be, that her repeated "I don't have a clue: HE did it" response really is the way she responds? Perhaps Dr. Ackerman really is as incompetent as she seems?

Interested about the push back at the SRC meeting. What happened? Can I read about it somewhere?

These pieces covered last week's SRC meeting, but they don't seem to mention this pushback either.

How can you not laugh hysterically at this?? I read this manifesto over TWO WEEKS AGO. It was published much earlier then in the Sunday Post. Amazing that weeks go by before Ackerman realizes she doesn't want her name on it and lets another lemming take the blame. How do we as human professionals deal with such an incompetent leader? It's sad and embarrassing and our children are clearly suffering with all of the public ridiculing of dedicated professionals. Shame...

I like how some site the wonderful work Rhee did compared to the previous CEOs in DC. Ackerman was the CEO shortly before Rhee arrived. Yet both of them sign the same document blaming teachers for dismal educational outlook.

I read Arlene's Ackerman's critique with considerable interest and a good deal of consternation.   Much better than the Manifesto.   Problem is her own practice doesn't reflect the politics of her critique.   Philadelphia educators will be surprised to learn that she is an advocate of collaboration and a passionate foe of teacher bashing.   Go figure.
