Facilities Master Plan coming next week

by thenotebook on Oct 26 2011 Posted in Latest news

The School Reform Commission will release its facilities master plan with recommendations for school closings, consolidations, and other actions next Wednesday, officials said today.

"The release of the plan and its recommendations will trigger a new phase of public engagement," according to a District press release. There will be a series of community meetings with a meeting to consider the recommendations "in late winter of 2012."

Cuts?! What is LEFT to cut?

At least we have over a year before the cuts are put in effect.

Over a year? How so? If they release the information next week, the SRC has a mandated 3 months before they are allowed to vote on the plan. That means February 1st. Conceivably school closings could happen right after that - although it would be insane to go through that mess right before the PSSAs, and insane to attempt it before the end of the school year (like in May and June when students typically get more violent and now here are the kids from the neighborhood school within arms reach). Folks at my school are scared that it will happen even sooner than February - if not closing right away then first consolidation and then closing. And there'll be some public meetings, but if they are like previous public meetings they'll only serve to inform the public, not to actually get feedback. Hopefully Nunery is different.

Wish I had your hindsight....even though Local 32BJ protects it's members with a 1 year Layoff Clause (if you receive a Layoff notice say 10/27/2011, your last day is "suppose" to be 10/27/2012)...it's not. That second notice can come at anytime. Maybe you drop off your kids from their school to their home and now here's your appreciation letter in your mailbox (that final notice) or maybe you working three workstations in an understaffed school and as the work piles on, you go home after working two weeks of 13 hours days to get that "Surprise Final Notice mixed in with your Bills" in the mail!

Personally, I'm hoping that they hold off from giving me my final notice till spring. I got a layoff letter during Summer Cleaning, so my "In Theory" Last Day is July 1, 2012. I'm working my 3rd week of 13 hour days for a Soul-less Principal in a Non-School Policed and Non Vice Principal in attendance Elementary school facility. Sarcasm has not surpass my method of communicating with anyone other than my staff (one person...my CA is on vacation)

The other day I told my Principal's Secretary I have more voices in my head, than an actual staff. I'm a relief engineer who's looking for the light at the end of the tunnel (as I lay on the tracks)

Facilities have suffered enough...go pick on someone else!
