Pedro Martinez named superintendent in Nevada district
by Erika Owens on Jun 29 2012 Posted in Latest news
The Reno Gazette-Journal is reporting that Pedro Martinez, a finalist for the superintendent position in Philadelphia, has been named superintendent in Washoe County School District in Nevada.
UPDATE: The Prince George's County Board of Education has issued a statement announcing that William Hite is departing.
UPDATE: The Reno Gazette-Journal updated its article to say that Martinez has accepted the position with the WCSD. The Clark County School District, where Martinez is now deputy superintendent, issued a press release congratulating him on his new position.
More to come on how this may affect the superintendent search in Philadelphia. District spokesperson Fernando Gallard says that "our process is still ongoing."

I thought he said Philly was his first choice? HA! I didn't believe that for one second anyway...

It's so gross how Fernando Gallard lies and lies and lies.

He's good at it too. Practice makes perfect. I agree, he is disgusting.

So what happens if Hite turns down the job? We are back at square 1. This is why 6 or 7 candidates should have been presented to the public!

Agreed!! My friend works in PG County. She is not well-pleased with his style of leading. And with him leaving, they will now have to search for another.

The SRC should hold off on selecting Dr. Hite. There is no need to hurry at all.
They should reconsider the local candidates who have already demonstrated a commitment to our school community and our children.
Dr. Hite while demonstrating a knowledge of the national issues, did not have an understanding of our local issues at all.
While I commend the SRC for conducting the meet and greets, there was clear disagreement in that many called for release of the names of the local candidates who were interviewed. The community input sessions clearly called for a local candidate.
As a point of fact, the last three outsiders who were our superintendents were abysmal failures in leading our school community -- Hornbeck, Vallas and Ackerman.
Yes, there are red flags with Dr. Hite, and the actions of Martinez, clearly highlights the issue of outsiders who are dedicated to no one but themselves. We need a leader who is dedicated to US.

More than half of the Philly candidates just took positions in other cities within the last week or two, even they have moved on.

But who are the "local" candidates? People already in the system? Nixon, Nunnery, etc? I wouldn't want anyone who is already in the system and already in bed with the SRC and the politicians.

But the SRC itself is an outside entity not answerable to the community. We can't expect anything else as long as we don't have home rule. For ten years we have been run by a colonial administration doing the interests of outsiders, not the community. Isn't it obvious this was what the state takeover was about? They've been trying to privatize since the SRC was set up (Edison). Ramos said it all two weeks ago when he told the Philadelphia legislative delegation that he answers to the Governor.

Glad Martinez got the job in NV because Philly has had this all planned out to holding off on their decision and if he would've waited (first choice or not) he would of been in jeopardy of not having a job. The SRC already knows who they want to hire (Hite) and they are just trying to find the perfect time to announce it- like probably at 5pm today. From what I have read on blogs from teachers and community members in Prince George County, Hite has left the district in complete shambles and is an imprint of Ackerman... if not worse.

Please give us the links to those blogs. The only one I know of is written anonymously and hard to verify. The people attached to it are extremely reluctant to say what they have to say in the light of day. When Ackerman came here there were verifiable news reports of her prior shenanigans from actual news sources, there does not seem to be the same info on HIte.

If you check the District website, there's an SRC meeting scheduled for 6PM Saturday. Hmm.... I wonder what that could be about.

Yes, this is the unverifiable blog that has no named author. Someone mentioned "blogs" (plural) from "teachers and community members". One blog with a lot of unverifiable accusations is not enough. Where is the confirmation from reliable news sources that vett their information (even if it is provided from an un-named source)? I do not have any particular allegiance to Hite, but I think one blog which may or may not be crazy is not enough to go on.

Yes, by all anecdotal accounts, Hite is Ackerman all over again, no transparency, disrespectful, dismissive and NOT classy at all. The Queen returneth.

Hite is not Ackerman all over again. I don't know how he'll do, but PGCS actually would rather he not leave. Compare that to Ackerman who, both in SF and Philly got run out of town, and even had the mainstream press in both cities calling for her departure.
You can argue that Philly should have taken a different strategy, but if they were going to go with a conventional job search, etc., Hite is about the best you could imagine. I can't conceive of any better credentials for an outside candidate (unless you looked for someone with a radically different background). And, for all the people saying Philly should stay internal, I'd challenge those to name someone specific internal that would be good? (And, honestly, as big of a mess as the SDP is, it's probably not a bad idea for someone with a fresh perspective to come in an make tough decisions, rather than someone tied down with personal connections and political alliances).

Just wait and see how Hite takes off this thing called Philly public school system. It will never be the same. Corruption, nepotism and proffessional misconduct will be the order of the day.

I hope you're wrong but several persons I know who know him to various degrees, claim he is out of the same arrogant, dismissive, he comes first mold of Ackerman. Dissent is seen as personal 100% of the time.
