Lorene Cary takes leave of absence from SRC

The District has announced that SRC member Lorene Cary is taking a leave of absence due to what is described as a "temporary" illness. Doctors said that she needed to rest so it doesn't become chronic.
The leave is effective next Monday.
Cary's absence leaves just four votes on the commission, which could prove problematic on important and controversial votes. Even with just four active members, the commission still needs three votes for a quorum, and three votes to pass anything.
Cary is one of two people appointed to the five-member commission by Mayor Nutter. A writer and Penn professor, she has taken on school climate and violence reduction as a major project.
The text of the press release, from the mayor's office, follows:
SRC Commissioner, Lorene Cary will be on temporary medical leave from the School Reform Commission effective on September 24, 2012.
In a letter to the Mayor and the SRC chair, Cary said that a lingering illness is severely curtailing her ability to work on the Commission and, heeding her doctor’s orders, she is resting and recovering “so as not to turn temporary illness into chronic incapacity.”
Dr. Lori Shorr, Mayor Nutter’s Chief Education Officer, said, “We appreciate the service Commissioner Cary has provided to the School Reform Commission thus far and wish her a speedy and full recovery.”

I met Lorene Cary during our school administrator meetings this summer and I actually like her a lot as a person. i think she genuinely means well. That being said, I'm not quite sure how I feel about the fact that she took on school climate and culture as a project with essentially no practical knowledge, presided over an absolutely horrendous reconstruction of the District's Student Code of Conduct, and will now step away to leave us to deal with the resulting mess.

Best wishes for your recovery Lorene. I will certainly carry on your "playing nice in the sandbox" metaphor for charter school and regular public school cooperation, and I will extend it to "sharing in the sandbox" in future articles.
I certainly respect and appreciate your contribution to our schoolchildren and our school community.
Thanks and Good Luck.

Lorene Carey is a wonderful person. Believe me, she is familiar with teaching and her mother worked for the school district too. No matter what is wrong with her I wish her well and please come back as soon as you are able, Ms. Carey.
