Educational summit about homeless students to be held Friday

The Students Without a Home summit will offer training on serving Philadelphia’s thousands of homeless students on Friday. The goals of the summit are to help organizations better identify students who are experiencing homelessness and help explain homeless students' rights to education.

The event, which will be from 12:45 to 4 p.m. at Temple University’s Kiva Auditorium/Ritter Hall Annex, is hosted by the People’s Emergency Center, the Children’s Work Group, and the Temple University School of Social Work. Expected to come are those who work with at-risk youth through community and faith-based groups, afterschool programs, and child welfare agencies.

Attendees will learn how best to access the District's Title I and Homeless Children's Initiative services, including afterschool and summer enrichment programs, information on school admissions and transfer procedures, eligibility guidelines for receiving tokens, and assistance in obtaining school uniforms.

More than 5,000 students are reported homeless annually in Philadelphia's School District. In Pennsylvania, only 40 percent of kids experiencing homelessness graduate from high school, according to the People's Emergency Center.

Under the provisions of the federal McKinney-Vento Homeless Education Assistance Act of 1987, the District is required to ensure that homeless students have access to education and other services they need to meet the same high academic standards as all students. To that end, the summit will also identify available resources to increase opportunities for youths to improve their learning and keep them on the path to achievement.

For more information about the summit, call 215-382-7522 ext. 264.
