Short film documents the impact of deferred action program

The Philadelphia Storytelling Project, along with the Philadelphia Deferred Action Network, has produced an eight-minute video about the local impact of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, an initiative that provides each eligible immigrant a work permit, a Social Security number, and safety from deportation.

The video, titled We Are DACA, tells the story of five young immigrants and their experiences as previously undocumented youth living in Philadelphia. Produced by Mark Lyons of the Philadelphia Storytelling Project and photographer Harvey Finkle (who also shoots photographs for the Notebook), We Are DACA was entered into the first annual Philadelphia DoGooder Awards.

The competition, which highlights nonprofit filmmaking, runs through Jan. 31. Community members can vote for a video once daily. The contest winner will receive funding to continue their work.

Thanks to the people who produced the video and those who were featured in it. Hopefully, the video puts a human face to the reality of undocumented young people and their desire to move forward with their lives.
