Opponents of the mass school-closings plan stood in front of City Hall this morning appealing to Mayor Nutter for help in stopping the District from closing 29 Philadelphia schools.
"We're here today to urge America's mayor, our Mayor Nutter, to take a stand with the community and his constituents, and instruct his two appointees on the School Reform Commission to vote for a moratorium," said Quanisha Smith of ACTION United and PCAPS.
The PFT's Jerry Jordan, Councilwoman Jannie Blackwell, who chairs the Council's education committee, and the NAACP's Jerry Mondesire were also there to criticize the District's plan for its lack of inclusion, its inconsistency, and its economic destructiveness.
The mayor has said that he supports the closure plan as is and that he is against a moratorium. He has also said that although he is actively concerned and attentive to what's going on, the school-closure plan is a decision for Superintendent Hite and the School Reform Commission.

Dr. Hite and the SRC will be at MH Stanton school tomorrow Tuesday,March 5 at 5:30pm for a community meeting. Any concerned community member may speak. Bring your protest to MH Stanton located at 2539 N 16th Street in North Philadelphia. Protesting at 440 is not going to have the impact you want if Dr. Hite & the SRC are at MH Stanton. PFT members will be wearing red.
