State House approves $45 million more for Philly's schools, but it's not over yet

By thenotebook on Jul 15, 2013 09:11 PM

by Holly Otterbein for NewsWorks

The Pennsylvania House passed a bill Monday that directs $45 million in additional state aid to Philadelphia's cash-starved schools, but only under certain conditions.

One of those conditions is that the money actually materializes.

The state has apparently persuaded federal officials to forgive a years-old debt, freeing up millions of dollars for public education.

However, Gov. Corbett's office said that negotiations between the state and feds over the debt have not been finalized. Corbett spokesman Jay Pagni declined to provide more details.

Comcast executive vice president David L. Cohen, who has played a key role in the negotiations, said it was his understanding that the two parties simply needed to complete paperwork before the deal is officially done.

Erik Arneson, a spokesman for Senate Majority Leader Dominic Pileggi (R-Delaware) said he has "no reason to think things won't work out."

But Sen. Vincent Hughes (D-Philadelphia) is more skeptical.

I do trust all of the ideas you've presented to your post. They are very convincing and can definitely work. Still, the posts are very brief for beginners. May you please prolong them a little from subsequent time? Thank you for the post.

Can someone explain to my why David Cohen is playing a key role in the negotiations? I smell corruption.

Submitted by John Hill (not verified) on July 16, 2013 10:25 am

Agreed. That's totally unsettling.

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on July 16, 2013 5:23 pm

Email him at david_cohen@comcast.com and ask (& let him know how you feel).

I got a lenghty response that included

"Our only interest was and is in preserving at least a minimally acceptable education for the 200,000 young people in Philadelphia who use our public school system."

Bet David L. Cohen doesn't want a minimally acceptable education for his family members.

This is less a promise of more money and a cudgel to beat you below the poverty line. In case you do not know a cudgel is:
cudg·el /ˈkəjəl/
Noun
A short thick stick used as a weapon.

Verb
Beat with a cudgel To use a questionable funding source to beat teachers into accepting a below minimum wage pay scale. So that the Wall Street owners of charter schools can increase profit margins.

you greedy bastard - trying to deny wall streeters their fair cut (99 percent plus or minus a few points).

When will the pft offer its concessions package? Denial won't print money.

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on July 16, 2013 5:11 pm

My fellow 1201 employees have taken a paycut, I for one as a mechanic have taken a $180.00 a month paycut and have seen our numbers dwindle in the past year. As a member of the plumbing department, I now run all over the city on any given day just to do 1 repair order in a school then run across town to do 1repair order in another school, knowing full well that there at least a dozen or more repair orders in the same school. We have on any given day no more than 12 plumbers on the street for the entire district. They expect us to do more because of the short number of employees. I took a 180.00 paycut, You get 180.00 less out of Me. We did not create this shortage either, but we pay our fair share, PFT and CASA should do the same.

Don't strain yourself the bathroom at my high school has not had running water for three years. Maybe you should give back $360 a week,

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on July 16, 2013 7:30 pm

don't blame us because you and your Union folded and were bullied into paying for other people's mistakes

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on July 17, 2013 6:30 am

Your union may not fold but there is no way the pft is walking away with no pay cut

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on July 17, 2013 10:38 pm

I bet teachers will not have to take a paycut. 1201 is a weaker union sorry to say that, but it's true. PFT has more power in its 10,000 members.

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on July 17, 2013 10:25 pm

Did you get the text message yesterday from the pft which stated that the district is not giving in on the 13% cuts? Good luck with your fantasy

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on July 18, 2013 9:10 am

Not a fantasy. Guess the schools won't be open because once contract expires its fair game. Guarantee no salary givebacks. Much harder to replace a teacher than a janitor. No pun intended.

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on July 18, 2013 9:40 am

If you refuse to go to work, the school will file a request for temporary injunctive relief with the courts. The courts will grant the relief while a new contract is negotiated. If the court order is disobeyed then pft leadership will be held in contempt.

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on July 18, 2013 10:23 am

You are another person who does not know the law. You are allowed to go out for up to 2 weeks before any injuction can occur. OOOOhhh, if even they were held in contempt big deal. Can't fire all of the teachers!! Way too many tpo replace and not enough people who want to work here. Then, there is the old "blue out". All teachers in the school call out sick. Shall I go on. We teachers are tired of this nonsense. Ackerman created the mess not us!!!

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on July 18, 2013 10:15 am

Actually I study the law for a living and you are absolutely incorrect. There are too many issues at play including but not limited to the children's education and the legal question if the SRC can unilaterally enforce contract terms. In regards to your comment about contempt, you clearly don't know what sanctions are available to the courts. Please stick to teaching and leave the legal questions to others.

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on July 18, 2013 3:47 pm

If your anti-teacher then go to a law blog!!!! It's a bunch of crap. Sorry but in a Democratic city, blue collar, teachers will be okay. I have heard people give the same scare tactics as you.

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on July 18, 2013 4:20 pm

You say "I have heard people give the same scare tactics as you" but then what? I hope you are correct but I'm not so sure this time.

Submitted by Strike now! (not verified) on March 22, 2014 1:12 pm

I hope you have studied teaching as well because if the SRC tries to enforce pay cuts you and the rest of the knowitalls will have to start subbing. Once you've actually been in the trenches then you will understand. Your arrogance is part of the problem. Your scare tactics are useless.

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on March 22, 2014 2:29 pm

This article is ridiculously old.

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on July 18, 2013 11:14 am

This is the reason the powers that be can and will continue to screw the working class. Every union should stick by every other union in this city. If one goes down we all go down. It's us against them, people. Wake up!!

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on July 16, 2013 7:37 pm

Maybe as plumbers we should make sure your bathrooms at your school our out of order. I would enjoy watching you run through the school yard, holding yourself on the way to a McDonalds fast food bathroom.

Submitted by Benz (not verified) on July 16, 2013 9:40 pm

No thanks- I would just piss on the bathroom floor like the kids do

btw- i sure hope that $2200 per year you are losin isn't 15% of your salary...

Submitted by anon (not verified) on July 16, 2013 11:59 pm

you're a class act benz.

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on July 17, 2013 6:57 am

Way to have solidarity with the other unions. The pft has few chips to play with and comments like yours lose public support for your cause.
