KCAPA is a wonderful addition to the area. The theater, music room, art rooms are world-class, and the teachers care about the students. As a neighbor, I am really proud of the community for making this happen.

is kcapa public school
Submitted by Erika Owens on Wed, 01/12/2011 - 11:22.
Yes, it is a public school. It's a neighborhood high school, which means that if you live in the neighborhood of that school (as defined by these things called "feeder patterns") you are guaranteed admission to that school. If you live outside of the neighborhood, you can apply, but admission is based on available space and a lottery for any available slots.

It's good to read so many glowing reports by students on KCAPA. It causes some concern, however, to notice the grammatical, spelling and other basic errors that should have been eradicated by fourth or fifth grade.
Students, not putting you down, but very concerned. Please remember when you're representing a school to show that it has provided you with a sense of belonging (absolutely great), but also a good education.

The school Principal Mrs. Debora Carrera, is the best that Philadelphia has! Go! Principal Carrera!!!!!...oh KCAPA MADE AYP IN 2011......
Submitted by Anonymous on Tue, 10/25/2011 - 20:22.
Kcapa might be da worst school that I've ever been. The learning conditions are distracting, everyday is chaotic, students scream and crack up,sing out loud and gossip during the classes, and plenty of teachers abide these chaos instead of calming them down.I'm a new junior this year, and I see it's totally hopeless in this "school".As I know, this year three of my friends had already transfered to other schools, which is really wise.I'm gonna be out of here soon as well.Since you can barely learn anything during your climax of learning in your whole life, switch to somewhere else to save your future! I don't know why on earth that people keep saying how attractive this school is,probably they are actually the staffs of KCAPA? Good luck with people who are in KCAPA or who want to go in!

I moved my sons out of this place earlier in the year and I don't regret it. They said most of the class period was spent trying to get the other students in their seats/stop talking. Whenever I was on the school campus, I got the sense that it was a consequence free environment... kids walking the hall, offensive language, disrespectful attitude. Shame... it's a really beautiful building with alot of resouces that are going to waste. I will say the teachers are good... very involved with individual achievement and willing to work with parents (especially with single working parents like myself)... but then the principal went and laid off half the staff from what I heard. Just another example of Philadelphia's costly failures.

There were quality teachers at the school but a very self serving principal. The principal, Debora Carrera, the highest paid in the SDP (why?), puts all the blame for student behavior on adults. It is a school that not only tolerates students misconduct and disrespect toward other students and adults but sometimes sanctions it. The principal, rather than creating a sound and safe learning environment, praises herself and trashes on teachers.

When can 9th graders apply to go to this school ?
Submitted by Anonymous on Wed, 08/01/2012 - 13:40.
I can't say much about the principal, I never saw her around. But the vice principal is a total joke! I'm shocked this woman graduated high school, let alone is running one. Like other parents mentioned on here, this school looks great, but is lacking a whole lot.
Submitted by Anonymous on Wed, 08/01/2012 - 16:21.
Principals evaluate vice principals; therefore, principals tell vice principals what to do. I don't know the vice principal, but the principal also does not know instruction / curriculum for high schools.
Submitted by Anonymous on Thu, 01/24/2013 - 01:49.
I can attest to this-- the principal is just as much an idiot as the vice principal. She's one of the district's puppet big wigs... the 6th highest paid in all of sdp schools. Just like the rest of the fools down at 440, she has no idea how to run a school.

I was thinking of having my son apply here for high school. But now I'm not so sure. I have seen some positive comments as well as some negative ones. I am sure I will see that with most schools but I am looking for someone to be honest. It is a good school or isn't it ? My son is into the Arts and I want him to be able to grow in that field as well as get an education. If I want him to play games I would of applied him to the neighborhood schools in our area. If there is a parent that is reading this that can give me an honest opinion on this school I would really appreciate it. My son is only allowed five slots for high school and if this isn't a good choice then I would rather replace it with one that is. Thank You!!
Submitted by Anonymous on Sat, 10/27/2012 - 08:38.
The thing about Kensington CAPA is that it looks like a good school-- the building is beautiful and the place receives a lot of good press, but at the end of the day, it's a neighborhood school. Same incompetent puppet administrators. Same behavior issues running amok. Same low level academics (which by the way, KCAPA likes to brag about making AYP-- a year later they're under investigation for cheating). You're getting the same education that you'd get at Kensington Business or Urban Education.
Do NOT be fooled. Don't waste a slot applying to this place.

Wow... This is how people let themselves represent their school? I thought this was an arts school. If any of those kids handed me a paper with "an I love mah skool" I would tear the paper up. Talk about illiterate. Take a course in English.
Submitted by Anonymous on Thu, 12/27/2012 - 01:16.
All of these seniors recommending their school all seem to be illiterate... Can they even read The Locomotive That Could?!
