The Arts Academy at Benjamin Rush

Mission Statement:
Our school is based on the belief that the arts provide an unequaled opportunity to foster intellectual growth by connecting arts and literacy. Visual and media literacy skills permeate all subjects at the high school. Reflective teaching and learning will be expected in every classroom, with an emphasis on building a community of learners to be thinkers and creators. The spirit of intellectual curiosity will be encouraged in and through the arts.
Accredidations and Awards:
From 2008 to 2014, students have received awards in these areas: Philadelphia Young Playwrights Awards; One Book/One Philly – Graphic Arts award; Young Artists Exhibition; Philadelphia Sketch Club; All-City Orchestra and Choir

Measures for Positive, Safe Learning:
Students in 9th-12th grades take project-driven core courses, as well as electives such as story-casting (digital filmmaking), creating theater, graphic arts, media arts, dance appreciation, chamber singers. Six habits of mind (or core values) frame the curriculum: Imagination, Communication, Empathy, Perspective, Analysis, and Commitment. These core values are integral to curriculum and instruction.
