For the Notebook’s Summer 2004 edition, “Focus on the Notebook’s first decade,” we brought together a group of parents, community activists, and researchers with a history of involvement in Philadelphia schools to reflect upon developments in parent activism and organizing over the last decade. For the first time since the local coalition known as the Teacher Equity Campaign unveiled its platform on how to close Philadelphia’s teacher quality gaps, School District officials have provided a point-by-point response, endorsing many of the recommendations made by the coalition’s 27 member groups.
Three neighborhood high schools – Germantown, Olney, and Overbrook – were recently added to the District’s “wish list” of schools projected to receive new buildings under the School District’s $1.5 billion Capital Improvement Program.
