About the Notebook

The Philadelphia Public School Notebook is an independent, nonprofit news service serving thousands of supporters of the Philadelphia public schools. The Notebook serves as an information source and voice for parents, students, teachers, and other members of the community who are working for quality and equity in Philadelphia’s public schools.

A group of concerned parents, teachers, and community members committed to improving public education founded the Notebook as a quarterly newspaper in 1994. We remain an independent journalistic enterprise, with nonprofit status backed by foundation and donor support.

Over 25 years, we have developed into a widely read and respected resource. Tens of thousands of visitors come to our website each month for daily education news, analysis and dialogue. Our print edition has a circulation of 55,000 copies. Most of these are distributed free of charge through each Philadelphia public school and Free Library branch as well as through charter schools and over 300 community organizations.

Each print issue of the Notebook focuses on a theme of vital importance to public education in Philadelphia and contains both news and commentary in English and Spanish. The Notebook publishes the newspaper four times per year, has fresh news content every weekday, and community events and dialogues about education and education reform.

Our mission

By providing reporting and analysis about public schools in Philadelphia and creating forums for dialogue and education, the Notebook empowers parents, educators, students and residents to improve conditions for all in the city’s public schools and to build strong learning communities.

The vision of The Philadelphia Public School Notebook is of a city with well-resourced public schools, shaped by and responsive to the communities that they serve – schools that start all of our children on paths of successful, lifelong learning.
