Obama and the stimulus: good or bad for testing reform?

Quick segue back to testing…there’s an interesting piece out of FairTest analyzing the “Dangers and Opportunities in Federal Stimulus Law.”

While more money looks to be heading toward assessment, this could be either good or bad – more money for the same test insanity we’ve been getting or more money to ensure richer, deeper, more nuanced assessment that treats students like people and not widgets that can be calibrated.

The analysis includes references to national standards, a possible (shudder) national test, merit pay tied to student achievement, and more. Also, there are lots of interesting links to other viewpoints and initiatives, reminders of what President Obama said during the campaign, and calls for “assessment reformers” to work hard to influence the process.
