Retired NASA astronaut Bernard Harris, the first African-American to walk in space, talked to an assembly of hundreds of students at Wagner Middle School in West Oak Lane in December. Harris, who was aboard the first flight of the Russian-American space program in 1995, visited the school as a part of his foundation’s national “Dream Tour” to encourage students to realize their personal potential through the problem-solving skills learned in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Prior to the assembly, Harris met with 30 students who represent the school’s top performers in math and science.
